Bishop Fernando Barrios Zaragoza and his wife recently moved back to their native Mexico from Houston, TX, where he was ordained Bishop for the Catholic Diocese of One Spirit in Mexico. They were married in 1999. Fernando was ordained a Catholic priest in 2003 in México City. Both have a B. A. in Divinity. Fernando has a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and an MBA, plays and teaches piano, singing and composition. He was a professor of Computer Science at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and also taught at the Jesuit Iberoamerican University (Comparative Religions, Financial Mathematics, Thesis seminar, Administrative research), and also taught Comparative Religions at the Study Centre of Human Values (CEVHAC).
“Fer” is the author of a textbook “Logics for You, Logics for Me” and a booklet “Notes On Ethics”. He speaks five languages: Spanish, English, German, Italian and Hebrew; reads Latin; and knows some French, and Greek. He has been a member of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), the Circle of Philosophy professors and the Mexican Society for the Study of Religions. His real passion is ecumenism and interreligious dialogue. He has been member of the Ecumenical Group of Mexico since 1977 and of the Interreligious Council of Mexico from 2001 to 2008.
In 1977, he founded the Ecumenical Community of the Holy Mary Mother of God. For 30 years at this community, he taught more than 60 different courses in the Bible, Spirituality, Liturgy, Moral Theology, and Ecumenism. He was the host of the TV program “Ecumenism” at Claravisión (today Mariavisión) for 8 months. His pastoral work involved visiting the sick, working with juvenile offenders in jails.
